The Register of Offloaded Costs is the documentary apparatus of the book ANTHROPY: a chronology of 168 milestones, from the first stone tools (≈ 3.3 million years ago) to contemporary algorithms, documenting for each innovation the order created and the debt displaced—elsewhere, later, or onto others. How to read a milestone
Each entry applies the grid of the anthropic hypothesis—social systems displace disorder rather than resolve it:
- Order created—the visible, immediate benefit, the structure gained: food security, written memory, monetary trust, coordination at a distance;
- Debt displaced—the invisible cost that this order moves out of its visible perimeter: material dependence, social exclusion, charges passed on to later generations;
- Categories—the nature of the transfer: energetic, social, cognitive, political, ecological, symbolic…
The Register does not tell the story of progress: it keeps its accounts. What other narratives present as solutions appears here as displacements—every solution incurs a debt, and history is the sequence of these transfers.
The trajectory: from the spatial to the cognitive
Read end to end, the chronology draws a migration that the book’s afterword sums up. In ages 1 to 3, order displaces disorder spatially: the dead beyond the village, waste beyond the city, “barbarians” beyond the empire. In ages 4 and 5, socially: onto serfs, onto colonies, onto labouring classes. In ages 6 and 7, temporally and cognitively: onto future generations (climate), onto attention (algorithms). Each time a receptacle saturates, the escape reinvents itself elsewhere—more abstract, more distant, less politicizable.

What the Register does not say
The Register shows where the debts go; it does not show how they come back. Yet they do come back—metamorphosed: CO₂ as heatwaves, colonial extraction as migrations, captured attention as dependencies. That return is precisely the object of the anthropic loop, formalized in AWP-07.
Another limit, assumed by the book: the Register’s categories—economic, social, political—are themselves analytical tools that carve up reality, and that carving can serve the very displacement it describes: separating the economic from the social makes it possible to move costs from one to the other. The Register records; it does not claim to settle what part of each transfer was avoidable.

The Register of Offloaded Costs forms the epilogue of ANTHROPY – A Big History of Civilization’s Hidden Costs (2026, 632 pages), where it accompanies the seven ages developed chapter by chapter, the diagrams, and the analytical afterword. The present English version renders, milestone by milestone, the version published by the author; milestones are organized by the seven ages of the book, according to their chronological bounds. The working vocabulary of the framework is defined in the glossary—not to be confused with the coupled cost registers of AWP-06, a typology rather than a chronology.
