Transparency and personal data
How your data is processed when you are contacted for professional purposes or make a request on the Free books page, how to exercise your rights or object to any further contact.
This page covers three uses: professional outreach, the “Free resources” scheme and image usage rights.
Why you may have received a message
In connection with my books, articles and Anthropie Working Papers, I sometimes write individually to professionals — journalists, researchers, teachers, editorial managers, elected officials or institutions — when their activity has a direct link with the text, the data, the resource or the book I am pointing to.
These messages are sent in small numbers, with no purchased lists and no mass mailing.
Data controller
Stéphane Lalut, economist — independent researcher. ORCID: 0009-0002-1794-4895.
You can contact me by replying to the message you received or through the Contact page of the site.
Data used and sources
Only the professional information needed to make contact is used: identity, role, institution, published professional address, work or activities related to the message, and a minimal record of exchanges.
This information comes from publicly accessible professional sources: institutional websites, media, universities, laboratories, journals, official directories or signed publications.
No private address is sought, bought or inferred from an assumed convention.
Purposes and legal basis
This data is used solely to send individualised professional correspondence: an editorial proposal, a press copy, the flagging of documented work, a scientific exchange or the sharing of a resource.
The processing rests on my legitimate interest in making known work that may be useful to the recipient’s professional activity, in accordance with Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR (the French RGPD).
No decision producing a legal or similarly significant effect is taken automatically. The data is neither sold nor passed on to third parties for their own purposes.
Retention
Preparatory files are deleted after 90 days at the latest. The minimal record of exchanges is kept for as long as is needed to follow them up.
In the event of an objection, minimised information is kept for at least three years, solely in order to prevent any further contact.
Your rights
You may request access to, rectification or erasure of your data, or restriction of its processing.
You may object at any time to further contact. A simple reply saying “do not contact me again” is enough. A minimal piece of data may then be kept exclusively in order to comply with this request.
You can exercise your rights by replying to the message you received or through the Contact page. You may also lodge a complaint with the CNIL (the French data protection authority).
“Free books” scheme
When you request a free copy on the Free books page, a random identifier is stored in your browser (until the site’s data is deleted) in order to prevent several copies from being allocated. When a copy is allocated, this identifier and the book chosen are kept on our technical infrastructure (Cloudflare) for the duration of the scheme, then deleted no later than three months after it closes. This identifier contains neither your name nor your email address. It is a measure strictly necessary to provide the service requested; your rights are exercised as indicated above.
Image usage rights
Book covers and images published on this site are © Stéphane Lalut, all rights reserved. Reproducing a cover is permitted in a press, review or quotation context, with credit (“© Stéphane Lalut”). For any other use — commercial, editorial or distribution —, permission is requested through the Contact page; the reply specifies the applicable conditions.
